Wine list

Champagne
To the north east of Paris, in the Marne valley lies the wonderful region of Champagne centred on the main towns of Rheims and Epernay.

Without question Champagne is the most famous wine name in the world and has always had famous names associated with it. For example, the Czars of Russia commissioned Baccarat to make crystal bottles to be filled with Champagne for the Russian Court. Hence the Louis Roederer Cristal we know today and which you will find on our list together with Dom Perignon, Bollinger and other famous names.

The grapes used to make Champagne are the Pinot Noir which gives body and power, Chardonnay which gives finesse and elegance and Pinot Meuniere which provides charm and softness.

White Burgandy
White Burgundy is still the first choice of the discerning for all fish and white meat dishes and is synonymous with Chardonnay the great grape of Burgundy which is still the worlds quality benchmark.

Two other white grapes are grown in the region, a Sauvignon Blanc in the Chablis area called Sauvignon de St. Bris and Bourgogne Aligoté, the wine that was traditionally the base for Kir.

From Burgundy come the finest dry white wines that all other countries emulate – Le Montrachet, Puligny - Montrachet, Meursault, Chablis Grand Cru, Chablis Premier Cru and of course not forgetting Pouilly Fuissé.

These wines are moderately expensive but they offer wonderful elegance and balance, breeding, aromatic bouquets and length on the palate. We are proud of the fine collection you will find on our list.

Red Bordeaux
Eleanor of Aquitaine, also Queen of England, was the power that gave Bordeaux and Great Britain such a close association that still obtains today. Britain is the market that owns and stocks more old vintages of the finest Clarets that money can buy. Wines that are the product of two grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

On the Médoc side of the Gironde river lie the great First Growths of Chateau Lafite, Château Latour, Château Mouton Rothschild etc. and these are all blends of Cabernet and Merlot. It is rare to find 100% Cabernet Sauvignon bottled in the Medoc.

On the other side of the river are Pomerol and Saint-Emilion where the Merlot is more predominant and consequently softer and slightly more robust wines. The great examples are of course Château Petrus and Château Cheval Blanc.

However Bordeaux is fascinating in the variety and different levels that it offers and these days there are some real gems to be found in the huge vineyards of the Entre deux Mers, Première Côtes de Bordeaux, Bourg and Blaye.

Red Burgandy & Beaujolais
The official Burgundy region runs from Chablis in the north to Beaujolais in the south. The two permitted red grapes are the Pinot Noir in the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise and Gamay in the Beaujolais and Mâconnais.

In the Beaujolais the Gamay produces wines that are a delight, very fruity, perfumed and soft. Great examples are Fleurie, Julienas and Moulin a Vent and all wines from this area should be drunk fairly young and at cellar temperature.

The Pinot Noir is the great test of winemaking. A delicate, thin skinned grape that makes, arguably, the most subtle, charming and seductive red wine in the world. The top wines of the Côtes de Nuits vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin, Vosne Romanée, Chambolle Musigny, Nuits St Georges etc. combine power with complex and subtle fruit.

The wines from the Côte de Beaune vineyards, Beaune, Chassagne Montrachet, Savigny les Beaune and Santenay are gently lighter with good round fruit and charm.

The Loire Valley
A wonderfully historic part of France famous for its great Châteaux, its River and countryside and, of course, lovely wines varying from the sharply dry to round, soft dessert wines.

The most famous name in the region, for the British anyway, is Sancerre and the art is in finding good examples of the Sauvignon grape that show good fruity aromas and a balanced, soft palate. Sancerre has a big brother in Pouilly Fumé, same grape but more more sophisticated and elegant.

The area of Vouvray produces what can be some of the longest lived wines of all and also a range of styles that encompass light dry wines to beautifully mellow examples and richer dessert wines. Amongst these latter is Côteaux du Layon a wine of incredible complexity and charm.

The Rhone Valley
The great Rhone river actually rises in Switzerland, enters France near Geneva and the rest, as they say, is history. It flows through the Jura mountains, joins up with the river Saone just south of Mâcon, flows through the gastronomic heart of France by Lyon and enters what has become cherished by all wine lovers, The Rhône valley. The birthplace of wonderful wines originated by the Romans or their predecessors, home of the “alternative Pope”, and producer of delicious fruits and foods.

This is where the Syrah grape reigns supreme from the almost humble Côtes du Rhone, big rustic Châteauneuf du Pape, charming Gigondas and the really great wines of Côte Rotie and Hermitage.

Curiously some vineyards produce only White wines, Condrieu and Château Grillet for example whereas Côte Rotie and Cornas make only red wine. All the others produce both red and white.

The wines from the Rhône Valley are generous, mouth filling and exhibit all the sunshine of this lovely area.

Italy
Italy is one of the largest wine producing countries in the world making over 5 billion litres of wine each year ! Quantity and quality used not to go together but Italy has made enormous strides in the past 20 years or so and now produces some truly great wines, the super Tuscans for example with their world reputation.

From the toe of Sicily to the northernmost border of Italy comes a fantastic variety of wine from both the indiginous grape varieties such as the Sangiovese, Trebbiano and, in recent years, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon et al.

From a warm hearted country come warm hearted wines, try the modern Chianti and Chianti riserva, wonderful wines with power and charm and, for that special occasion, Sassicaia or Tignanello, wines that can well be compared with the world’ greatest.

Spain
A diverse country producing some of the most diverse styles of wine possible. From Sherry, still a marvellous glass of wine, and a great aperitif, at wonderful value for the quality. The full, robust wines from Rioja, the elegant Wines of the Navarre and to the really stunning examples from Rueda and the Ribero del Duero and the vibrant white wines from the Albarino, a combination of Spanish sunshine and Atlantic breezes.

The laws in Spain are very very strict and the words, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva have real meaning and govern the length of time a wine has to spend in cask and bottle before sale.

In the important region of the Penedes, long an area of good quality, exciting wines are being made from that most versatile of grapes the Tempranillo the backbone of the Spanish wine industry. Also from this region come CAVA, sparkling wine made in the Champagne method with a good full body. Much overlooked but well worth trying

New world wines
We carry in our list a very good variety of wines from the New World but if we included a page for each country our list would be enormous. Our range extends from our English-speaking cousins in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA to the Spanish speaking countries of Chile and Argentina.

All of these countries use what we might call “European” grape varieties which were mostly introduced by European settlers and the like. For example the Conquistadors took grapes with them when they conquered South America, the Germans who settled the Barossa valley in Australia over 150 years ago also took grape vines.

However the high ambient temperatures in these countries made the making of fine and elegant wines a real problem until modern technology took over and when fermentation at much cooler
temperatures was introduced only over the past 30 -40 years. In addition the understanding of maturation and the use of wooden casks also happened about this time. In fact it is true today that
many of the New World countries still import French and American oak casks for maturing their finer wines.
